The Travelling Red Dress

Have you ever felt the need to look wonderful even if you didn’t feel it?  My friend Basilia gave some friends this opportunity last weekend and a little magic was shared.

I haven’t been feeling the happiest lately, and have started a dozen blog posts and posted none, lacking the courage to be sad openly and honestly when there are so many good things in my life. Perhaps I might just click “publish” and share one of these posts soon. Perhaps not. Probably not. It’s so much easier to just smile, even if it’s hard to smile. If you are new to my blog then a little background here  is one post a long time ago with a little insight to my boy, who is often, unfortunately, the reason I want to cry.

The Travelling Red Dress is Magical you see, and you could be the next to feel it’s special effects. Yes “you”. Yes “really”.

A short while ago I read a blog post by Jenny about The Travelling Red Dress and loved the thought behind it. I have followed Jenny since I first read about KKMF and I have admired her use of language. She is bold and honest, and fearlessly writes her way into your heart.  God I wish I had her guts! She has had her share of downs and is hilariously funny. Anyway, she posted about revisiting the Red Dress, I read it, and thought along with a million other people that it was a nice thing to do. Then it promptly left my mind. My friend Basilia brought it up a few days later,  I recalled the post and how wonderful it was, but Bas was bent on the idea that she would DO IT! She wanted to buy a dress, have some fun in it and then send it on its way to brighten lives, give smiles and maybe make someone feel good for a while. What heart she has!

From Jenny (aka The Bloggess)
“I want, just once, to wear a bright red, strapless ball gown with no apologies.  I want to be shocking, and vivid and wear a dress as intensely amazing as the person I so want to be.  And the more I thought about it the more I realized how often we deny ourselves that red dress and all the other capricious, ridiculous, overindulgent and silly things that we desperately want but never let ourselves have because they are simply “not sensible”.  Things like flying lessons, and ballet shoes, and breaking into spontaneous song, and building a train set, and crawling onto the roof just to see the stars better.  Things like cartwheels and learning how to box and painting encouraging words on your body to remind yourself that you’re worth it.

And I am worth it.”

” But here’s the thing…you are worth it too.  Which is why this week the red dress will begin a journey, traveling from city to city so that other people can wear it and love it and feel as special and vivid and dynamic as they already are.  Because sometimes we all need a little red dress to remind us of that. ”

The Traveling Red Dress  and The Traveling Red Dress Revisted. Go see her amazing photos and read her words. I love her.
Pay a visit to her Pinterest Board also and see the amazing red dresses. Sigh

Jenny sent it on to Leanne in Canada – she rocked that dress in snow boots as she embraced Winter.  See her here The Travelling Red Dress in Canada -  and here is her post when the magical red dress began it’s journey to her.

This dress is being shared in Australia, starting here in Geraldton and hopefully it will go on and on until the dress is threadbare and completely worn out. Please join the facebook page to see where our dress will go, who it might reach and every once in a while the lives it might touch. Lets scatter this magic as far as we can.
If you would like to wear this dress for whatever reason, please let us know here, it might just make its way to you.
You don’t have to share your experience, you don’t have to share your photographs, the only real responsibility you would have is to send it on to the next person with instructions to keep it going.
It fits a variety of sizes, as you will see in the amazing photos as it has a corsetted back, with an extra piece that fits in to make it suit larger sizes too.

On our girlie weekend away, all 5 of us slipped into the dress, and shone for a short while, while our friends photographed us. I must admit it was a little daunting, especially as I was mostly concerned about my weight, my skin, my hair and how it would come up in photographs. Ugh. I am plain, I am heavy. I don’t like to spend money at the hairdressers, and years of oily skin has ruined my pores. I don’t like looking at myself, I don’t really care that much,  and I don’t even own a full-length mirror. I am not usually worried about how I look. But I loved that dress! I would never ever have a dress like that.  Oh how I desperately wanted to look beautiful and I thought that dress would do it. I was disappointed when I saw the photographs, the fat spilling over the edges in some, the silly smile I plaster on because my relaxed face looks like I am angry, or sad, or something. Then I took a better look when I got home and I showed my kids. ” Oh Mum, you are so beautiful”. They looked past the fat, the plain hair, the open pores. They even looked past the dress - and they think I am beautiful. They really do. Then I picked out the fat ones and edited others, oh how I love photoshop. :) And God I love that dress!

Thank you Basilia for the opportunity to look beautiful, to run about outside the police station in a fabulous red dress. Thank you Nat for all the beautiful photographs, you have such an artistic eye and so patient to get the right shot. Thank you to my lovely friends for such a great weekend – golly it WAS FUN~!  (see their photographs here – please click “like” and show your support) and thank you Jenny! You inspired so many people. The world is a better place because people like you are in it~

Want to wear this dress? Click here and you just might be able to!

YOU ARE WORTH IT!

Making new look old

Seems that is such a popular look for scrapbooking, that almost everything scrapping I touch I feel the need to distress and ink. Every flower, every edge.. my poor old daubers get a work-out. Edges are roughed, photos are sanded, I even got the store an electric distresser for the last class of the term there was so much distressing in it. Love that look.

Term 4 2011 Sneak Peek Scrapbook House Geraldton Class

This terms classes is no exeption and I took it one further and did the photo as well. But I realise this isn’t something that can be easily done at home as I used a photoshop program to do it. Seeing as I haven’t found the time to teach photoshop lessons again, I thought I would offer to do this for you.

This is the orginal colours… a little playing in Photoshop and this is the result.

So… if you are taking our Term 4 classes, and have a photo in mind that you would like to use for the “Handsome” page, and you would like it looking like this aged photo… then bring it in on a USB and I will alter it for you.

Have a great day!

Reading old posts

Instead of writing today I had a little flick back through some old posts. I have been doing this gig for 6 years now; writing this blog. Sharing snippets of my life, my work, my family. Hopefully it inspires, gives someone a smile, or encourages someone to hug their child. I don’t really mind if it doesn’t do any of those things, but I’d really like to think that it possibly could.

Instead of writing about my fabulous Sunday, tonight I read back through an old post… and you know what? It inspired me! It made me smile, and it encouraged me to go and hug each of my children.

This one - my birthday a few years back.

Yeah… that’s what it’s all about! I love my life.

So about today… This morning after my King let me have the longest sleep-in, I played plasticine with my boys and I can’t wait to show you the creations of my Child #4, he is amazing. Let’s just say he has been “smurfed”. I spent hours in the garden again, (worked till I was sore instead of just getting a half hour to play with), the boys went off to a friend’s house (so it was blissfully quiet for 3 hours) the King washed and clipped the mutts, Child #1 was happy all day,  and the Princess baked some sweets. My camera is unhappy and I haven’t been on 365 for the longest time, but I brought out the little work camera to snap some pics of her meringues… Pat this is what happens to your eggs!

I am so glad I allowed my princess to bake with me at every opportunity when she was little, even when it was too messy or took too long.  I am so glad I let her wear what she wanted to wear, her choice of clothing is completely adorable. She made this dress at her Nanna’s a little while back, because she wanted something that was more her style. I am so glad she is exactly who she is – because she is perfect!

Sugar and spice and everything nice, ribbons and curls because she’s a girl.

Take care, see you soon.

He does a mean Michael Jackson

If you drive past me and I don’t notice you… it’s because I have Michael Bublé singing to me… very… loud. Sorry ’bout that. I love driving home from work these days… not just because I finally get to go home to my lovelies, but because Michael sings to me and his band plays just for me.

Miss L and I were lucky enough to share a weekend earlier this year and take some time off to spend some time together and see Michael Bublé in concert at The Sandalford Winery. We both love the Bublé.

I snuck my camera past security and was waiting for the police to come carry me away as I clicked each shot.. but they didn’t. I was well hidden amongt 30,000 other fans. But I HAD to get a photo.. it’s what I do! And I HAD to get one good one for my 365 project. HAD to. Mmm, wonder if that’d stand up in court? Me thinks not.

Michael Buble concert Australia

oh… and the man can DANCE! He does a mean Michael Jackson. What a brilliant concert.

So, I just wanted you to know if you drive past me and hear my base speakers boom booming in my car… it is most definately not rap music… but most probably Michael Bublé. Sorry ’bout that.

Who do you listen to in your car?

Learn to Pick Your Battles

k, this is seriously funny!
Go read this now.
http://thebloggess.com/2011/06/and-thats-why-you-should-learn-to-pick-your-battles/

Too funny huh? I think we could be the very best friends ever! If only we weren’t in different countries. Haha. I love how she writes, I love to read it, and wish I could be so bold… but alas no. I am not bold. Not bold as brass like she is. Knock knock.. TOO FUNNY! but I just can’t do it. (haha… rolls away laughing) Oh she is wicked.

So… this week the shop has seen some Prima come and some Prima go… we have had restock of all our A4 invitation lines. I have been ordering so many new lovely ranges that Kira is a little concerned where it all is going to go. No fear.. we will fit it in like we always have (somewhere). Our sales are still on till the end of the month and slowly the racks are emptying. Most of the punches are gone now, just a couple left, so our main line is Martha Stewart with more of her punches arrving next week. Love those border punches. Just sayin’.

Last weekend my family was invited to our friends’ farm to see the lambs. Oh.. so beautiful! I treasure days like that.. out with my kids, chatting, laughing and seeing them experience new things… like riding on the back of a ute (shh… not allowed to do that) and patting a week old lamb, talking to an ancient sheep and chasing birds… and seeing through the scope of a shotgun. Things my kids will remember for a long time what a lovely afternoon we had, we really did, in so many ways. Being my first day off this school holidays (Sunday) I took my camera along to try to catch up on my 365 project. I got some lovely shots. Here are some to share.

Could I love it any more?

Just looking at this “about video” by Prima makes me love them all the more. Handmade, unique and breathtakingly beautiful. When all our flowers arrive for us to put on our pages,  I think I might just appreciate them even more now.

and here’s another something I didn’t think I could love any more… but I do so more and more everyday… my baby girl in her red coat.

Out for a walk 153 / 365
Another busy day, so I have used a photo from the weekend. Used a little selective colouring for the Bougainvillea and of course THAT coat.
Had so much fun playing with this series. Shame my battery went flat because I could have photographed her all day!

Take care of you. xx

Baby it’s cold outside!

Just a couple of 365 photographic updates for you right now. Brrr. it’s cold here. I hope you had a lovely weekend! School holidays here we come! Yahoo!

Her coat 152 / 365
A little girl once explained what her new coat would look like… right down to the length, buttons and colour. This was 2 years ago, but still she believed that and one day she would find it. I heard the story so many times, I could almost see it like she did. One day it would come to her. On Friday her dream came true – whilst shopping with Nanna. The perfect coat. It was there. Finally. Her coat.

Winter Warm 151 / 365
The days might be chilly, but it’s always nice for a walk to the park. Berets and beanies for us today ( the kids said I looked like a burglar with my black beanie) but Em has worn berets for a couple of years now, and they just suit her!

Dear Photograph…

You know how I am a sucker for photographs right? You would also know that I am a sentimentalist. Well, if you are a bit like that too (it’s ok.. I won’t tell anyone) then you need to go look at this site called Dear Photograph, where people take a picture of the past in the present. Here’s one of my favourites.

If you could do this… would you know what old photo you would like to photograph in the present? It’s got me thinking that’s for sure.

Anyway… here is todays’ 365 photo project upload.

Page of the Month – July & August

The next two classes in the Basic Grey Page of the Month series feature the new Out of Print and Oxford collections. I know many of you have been chompin’ at the bit to see what’s coming up next for these classes, so I’m happy to share with you the layouts that you can do if you have the subscription. (Oh and I have one kit of each left in store if you missed out last time)

Now just to give you an idea of what these value-packed classes include, with this particular kit you’ll receive 10 double-sided patterned papers (2 each of 5 different designs), a sheet of laser cut cardstock, a package of the new yo-yos embellishments, a sheet of cardstock title stickers and a sheet of alphabet stickers.
Perfect for  two vertical 4×6 photos and two 4×4 photos – you’ll also need  border punch ( oh my – come see our new Martha Stewart punches and a white journaling pen to create the two-page, 12×12 layout you see above, and there will be a bunch of leftover goodies to use on future projects!

The August class features “Oxford”—perfect for those school photos, but masculine enough for your favourite boys too!
With this class, you’ll get ten double-sided patterned papers as well, plus a sheet of cardstock element stickers, a sheet of element stickers, a pack of die-cut “pieces” and a pack of Office Tabs which are exclusively available with these kits due to a production shortage at Basic Grey!
To complete this layout you’ll need five 4×4 photos, a scallop border punch, a 1″ circle punch and your journaling pens.
If you want these kits – contact me.

My 365 photographic entry for today is actually one I took a while back that has been waiting for a place to post. Taken from above, nice and close.

End of term draws near.

After a lovely weekend with my family I am ready for the last week of term and look forward to the school holidays, sleep-ins and being with my King, Princess and Princes. During the break at work we will put on the finishing touches to our Term 3 classes, already they are looking great.

With the prices of scrapbooking falling so much, we are happy to announce that we have had to restructure our class prices… to your advantage! Those who booked in advance this term already have credits awaiting them as the stock that came in was at great prices. So if the old dollar was holding you back from scrapping… then no more… come in to see our great affordable classes to suit you!

Check out the kids timetable on the “Current Timetables” to see what Em has in store for the kids over the holidays. Pics and dates will be added soon. We also have a Late Night Lock In over the break, the last weekend of the holidays, I know a few people who have been hanging out for one of these!

And of course… followed by the 365 photographic entries for yesterday and today.

Labelled a Weed 147 / 365
But it’s really quite pretty. Back in the garden again this weekend, (seems it’s the only place I can hide out where it’s relatively quiet) and we planted some new little plants. Most of my time was spent weeding… there are five hundred trillion weeds (trust me I counted them) most of them small, but they all had to go, and with all the little self-seeded plants in amongst them, I didn’t dare leave them till my darling hubby comes along with the poison and kills everything. Some weeds were large, and flowering like this beauty, and yes, this one was pulled up too. Shame as they grow so well and have such a pretty flower, but they completely take over… so they had to go of nothing else would survive. Sometimes you have to let go of something good if you want something better there in it’s place.

Winter green 148 / 365
More weeds… but it is oh so nice to see it so brilliantly green down the back of our yard for a change. The only thing that really grows well under out huge Gum trees are the weeds in winter. We will have to get to them soon. (and I use the term “we” loosely here, I mean “he”, haha)

Merry week gone by

Don’t you just love it when you are so busy that time flies? Or do you dislike it? I am not sure. On one hand it’s nice to be so active… on the other I feel like I am on a merry-go-round, it’s all fun till you want to get off and you can’t. You have to ride it out. But it’s fun, so it’s ok. This is me, saying the same stuff I say at the end of every term, love it, but am looking forward to school holidays. My kids have been working very hard this term (and for those interested in math scores - the boys work paid off, they both got B’s – without leaving classroom or aid) Now they want a kitten as a pay-off. Lord help me!

Another week of awesome classes gone by. Book now for next term and also for the kids during the school holidays. Here’s a pic of Saturday’s  kids class. Fun! And they all got it done on time, cutting, inking, mounting, string, and all! They are such legends in our kids class.
We made some more kits up (lucky to anticipate another over-full class) and we have one little lonely kit left for someone who would like to put it together. Full instructions and photograph included. $19.95

And here are a couple of my 365 entries for this week from around my yard. We have been getting some lovely rainfall.

Native 138 / 365
The rain washed most of the dust… not all, and will bring more flowers. Everything will be clean and shining soon.

Vinca 139 / 365
My garden is loving all this rain we are getting… it really suffers being on water restrictions.
My boys on the other hand are NOT loving the rain… it’s too loud on the tin roof through the night. Ah well… can’t win all the time.

Down the weedy path 140 / 365
The yard is transformed into green now the rains are here and it’s a welcome change, even if most of the green are weeds. :) Thought I’d snap this little angel reading a book under my daughters archway to the cubby. She’s busy all day today at school, (yes it’s Sunday) for a “write a book in a day” activity to raise money for Princess Margaret Hospital. From 8am to 8pm! Written, printed, illustrated, bound and presented. I keep thinking about her and think she will be one tired little miss when she gets home. 2 half hours to go.

Good things are coming 137 / 365
Miraculously my Freesias come up every year about this time and I know very soon that a whole bunch of the most gorgeous scented flowers will be growing in our garden. They grow so tall that they fall over! So many good things coming our way!

I am inspired and happy. Tired, as our excellent class tonight went WAY over time and some people kept me out late last night,  but happy.  I met a lovely lady today and I am grateful for the people who enter my life.  A short conversation ( oh ok.. who can I kid… we were talking for AGES) and we have so much in common and similar views. She made me step back and take a look at myself and be proud. I have such doubt in myself, question everything, procrastinate terribly and then still end up wondering if I am doing the right thing! Thanks Cherie for renewing my faith in myself and my lovely little store. xx

Happy Star Wars Day

May the 4th be with you. If you don’t get this… then, ahem… sorry and excuse my nerdiness. (oh and feel sorry for me living with so many boys). If you do get it… laugh along with me. I saw this on the 365 project site I visit and just had to repost it.. then went looking for a photo to add to it. I just knew I had some images on my computer somewhere.

This is the set up and photography of child # 4. He takes after his Mamma in the photography department… he takes after his Papa in the dork department (Star Wars)

So…

May the 4th be with you!

Girls

123 / 365

It’s a beautiful thing to have such lovely friends. My girl was lucky enough to have 3 of her friends come and share her birthday with her today. These girls are such lovely kids, and it’s a pleasure having them in our home. Happy, funny gorgeous girls! And for a change I wasn’t outnumbered by BOYS!

Hope you have a good one!

Who said it was dumb? Oh… that’d be me.

I vote we have 5 days off every couple of months. Wow… what a refresher!
I have to admit that when I first was told we would be getting Tuesday off as well as the regular 4 day Easter break,  I thought it was dumb.
I even wrote “Dumb Day Off” in my work diary. After  4 luxurious days off why on earth would we need another? Why did I even ask? Because it makes us sit and have wonderful conversations over breakfast with your 12 yr old. Because some jobs take a few days to get into… and a few more days to complete. Because you can go for a drive with just one of your twins… and really “hear” them. Because your house needs attention… and someone mixed up the order of the flannels and the tea towels in the linen cupboard! Because your girl desperately wants her cubby looking habitable before the year 2017. Because one more swim is just what the kids need to get moving.
I have loved the Easter holiday and totally take back all my “dumb” comments. Thanks be to the powers that made it so!
Now… let’s see if I can haul my butt out of bed in the morning to get to work and join Kira. Anyone else heading back to work tomorrow after time off or are you slacking it a bit longer with the school holidays like my lot here?

Last day of the Easter holidays for me. Oh how lovely it was. We swam in the pool again, but we’d worked pretty hard so it was an ‘afterdark’ swim and no lovely photos. Here’s another from the other day.. she was just as pretty today as she was then.

Time to Paint

I do hope you are enjoying your Easter holiday. Our holidays are spent at home with the family, not that we have a lot of choice in that matter, but we enjoy it just the same. Being the ‘working Mum’ my home is often neglected and my kids miss out on a lot of ‘fun Mum stuff’, so each holidays I try to make it worth the wait and do stuff with them. Simple ‘fun Mum stuff’ like swimming, watching tv and hanging out together. My girl child is away with friends and I do miss her! Being in a house full of boys, completely outnumbered is challenging and I have had to put up with all manner of conversation and fart jokes. Today seemed to flow so well, and my number one rule was to ban tv and computer (for all our sakes) till after dark. What a difference that makes! We cleaned and tidied and I got 3 loads of washing done (Josh watched… lazy bugger) as they pulled out the Kings’ birthday present – model airplanes, and they painted and glued and sanded the afternoon away. After lunch we all headed for a swim next door (even Josh) and then came back home for more painting. I decided to finish off a painting that I had started earlier this year.. it’s sat and sat, waiting for me. So today I finished it and was happy with the result. No idea what kind of bird that is… haha, but I made it for a special lady who likes red breasted robins. I should have googled robins perhaps, but copied from a picture of a bird I liked and made it’s breast read instead. Ah well, it’s kinda cute and she will like it I am sure. She has no idea that I have done it for her, hopefully she won’t think I’m just plain weird.

We also watched a movie, but child #3 headed off to bed unwell, it seems my kids are guaranteed to get a cold 2 days after going to the aquarena. He goes about 2 or 3 times a year  and EVERY time gets sick, and he is not sick in between! Grrr… they must get the water up their nose or in their throats. I just pray it doesn’t go through the house. Makes me want to avoid that pool.

I have been working on card classes too, last night and tonight. It’s easier creating when you’re not under the pump and much more enjoyable too. Maybe by the end of tonight I will have one full class done, with additional samples. (yes.. I tend to overdo things, I know, but ”class” has to be good!)

Enjoy your weekend!

Today was such a lovely day hanging out with my boys. There seemed time for everything. They put together some model airplanes so I got out my paints and finished off my ‘bird on a branch’ that’s been sitting on my easel for the longest time.

Motherhood

Wouldn’t have a clue whether any of these birds are mothers or not, but I’d like to think that they all stil hang out, even when they are grown, like I hung out with my Mum tonight.
We went to see the show “Motherhood” tonight, I laughed, I cried… (I know I am a woos), but it was wonderful! Thoroughly recommend it for any Mother.
_________________________________________________________

It was a hilarious, musical journey about the lives and friendships of four very different mums sharing their humorous insights into the challenges of motherhood. There’s Barb, an over-worked, underpaid, stressed-out mother of five; Brooke, the lawyer, who works too much and barely sees her kids, Trisha, a single mum struggling to balance work, her family and her divorce and finally Amy, the naive young woman about to have her first child.
Reminded me of the days when I had girlfriends that I used to spend time with on a fortnightly basis, morning tea/lunch/afternoon tea. We’d chat/laugh and cry together over the trials and tribulations of motherhood. Miss that now-a-days working so much.
So if you’re a Mother, and you get a chance to see this show, get a babysitter and DO IT. oh… and pack your Tena.

The old Beech 18 gained a lot of interest, and boy did it kick up some dust as it taxied up the runway. Note to self – don’t wear white. Would have LOVED to get my darling a ride on this for his birthday, I didn’t know they were taking bookings, and we couldn’t get back for the only available flight left – so would have done it! Definately on my list of things to do for him. Next time!

Isn’t it amazing how we can’t see some things that are clearly in front of us? Hidden in plain view. Some things we just cannot see for the narrowmindedness, some things are not visible due to a sense of clouding. Some things we refuse to see.

Look beyond your busy day, beyond that piece of work that is overdue, close your ears to the kids fighting. Look out and see the world, the beautiful wonderful incredible world that is out there.. in plain view.

Oh… and another plane picture, just for fun. Hope you had a great day.

How gorgeous is she? My girlfriends little girls are such cute models, this is her littlest one. This photo is from last week, we have so many sweet shots, just had to share.
